I know that this post may be a little late to the game since Lightning for Outlook came out back last summer (Summer ’16) but I think it an important topic that could relieve many of the stresses I find people have with Salesforce for Outlook.

Salesforce For Outlook Download
First, let me address the question I know you have, Lightning for Outlook DOES work with Salesforce Classic and of course, Lightning.
I find that there are many benefits to point out with the Lightning for Outlook. The first being the fact that is it not an application that you have to download onto your desktop, which is a good thing as I have seen those downloads cause quite a bit of trouble. Lightning for Outlook is an add-in for Office 365.
Looking at Lighting for Outlook (L4O) and Salesforce for Outlook (S4O) I think these are the combinations that can work (provided you use the right versions, but both Outlook 365 and on-premise Exchange Server can be used): Outlook on Windows PC (YES: L4O, S4O) Outlook on Mac (YES: L4O) Apple Mail on Mac (NO) Outlook Web App - Chrome (YES: L4O). Outlook and Outlook on the web. Due to limitations in Outlook for Mac, MFA for the integration isn’t supported in that version of Outlook. Salesforce includes a managed list of Microsoft Outlook web app domains, such as outlook.com and office365.com. As soon as you enable the Lightning for Outlook option, users could relate emails to Salesforce records more efficiently by enable Email to Salesforce. Enable enhance email option with Lightning for Outlook and customize content with App Builder options to make each email communication more worthy and attractive as shown below –. All add-ins to Microsoft email clients are subject to this, not just those from Salesforce. The pinnable taskpane should be available in Outlook for Mac, in the regular release channels, as of version 13. Lightning for Outlook is an add-in for Office 365. Your IT team can set it up in such a way that users don’t even need to download or install it themselves, they can just see it appear, like magic! Another lovely feature is that it can work on both Mac and Windows, a serious downfall for the Salesforce for Outlook app is that it is only for Windows.
Lastly, is the design, oh such a lovely design upgrade. Lightning for Outlook, as expected looks like Lightning and has the grace of the UI of it.

If you haven’t figured my decision from above then I will note it shall be Lightning for Outlook. It looks lovely and it works smoothly like a mini-Salesforce at your Outlook fingertips.
P.S. for those of you who may have had issues with the lack of being able to attach to a record when composing like you could in Salesforce for Outlook, that has been resolved the Summer ’17 release.
